Drawing Inspiration from music

A little note about how I've found design inspiration from albums and artists that I identify with.

Album covers arranged in a grid, from left to right Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here, Muse - Origin Of Symmetry, Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, Phoebe Bridgers - A Stranger In The Alps, Death Cab For Cutie - Plans & Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning

I’m a sensitive, introspective, reflective & empathetic person. I find a deep connection with art of any kind and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I cry when I watch sad movies, I like to see the emotion behind paintings and designs, and I feel music. A tangible emotional response to the meaning and emotion of a piece of music.

I found from an early age that I had this response to music, and I can pinpoint sitting listening to my dad’s Pink Floyd albums and reading the sleeves as a transformative moment.

Storm Thorgerson and his Pink Floyd covers were an early fascination for me, it was a visual representation of music, I’d not even considered that possible before that moment.

After this I started paying attention to what imagery came with the music I was buying. The Origin Of Symmetry by Muse was another cover which I remember studying as I listened to the music over and over again.

Some of the favourite designers and artists are ones I’ve been introduced to via album covers. I’m looking at a print I bought from Angela Deane, who did the ghost album covers for Phoebe Bridgers right now for example.

Fast forward to today, I’m not unfortunatley producing artwork for album covers for a living, but I like to work listening to music as I enjoy trying to channel some of that inspiration into what i’m producing.

It helps me to visualise what I’m aiming for. It’s more useful if I’m creating something personal that something for work, but honestly it works for both much of the time.

I see it as a bit of a super power, If I’m feeling stuck, on goes the headphones and getting lost in sound often leads me to find my way in art.
